The online network X has caused major anger after individuals utilized its AI chatbot Grok to manipulate photos of females by taking off their garments.
Several examples have been seen where the technology has been used to remove clothing from female subjects to show them in swimwear without consent, as well as to insert them in inappropriate situations.
XAI, the organization behind Grok, remained silent to questions, aside from an standard message stating "traditional news outlets lies".
A government spokesperson stated that legislation is being proposed to outlaw nudification technology. Under a new law, anyone who supplied such technology would "receive a prison sentence and substantial fines".
"The platform has the ability to stop these types of abuse if they desired to," said a law professor, adding they "appear to enjoy impunity."
The regulator Ofcom said platforms must "evaluate the potential" of people accessing unlawful material on their networks, but did not specify whether it was at this time investigating X or Grok in regarding artificial intelligence pictures.
Grok is a free artificial intelligence—with some paid-for features—which answers X users' queries when they mention it in a post.
It is commonly used to provide commentary or further background to other posters' comments, but people on X are also can modify an posted picture through its AI image editing function.
The system has been faulted for enabling users to produce images and videos with explicit content and sexualised material, and it was in the past alleged to have been involved in creating inappropriate material of celebrities.
"X has been permitting the generation and spread of these pictures for months without taking any measures and we have not witnessed any action by oversight bodies," the expert added.
XAI's own acceptable use policy bans "depicting images of individuals in a pornographic way".
In a comment, Ofcom said it was illegal to "create or distribute non-consensual intimate images or illegal content" and confirmed this included explicit AI images generated with AI.
It said services such as X were required to take "suitable actions" to "reduce the danger" of users viewing unlawful material on their platforms and to take down it quickly when they learn of it.
