The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate horror films: Sit down with your loved one and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it could look like standard physical horror, but inside Together exists a profound meditation about how we choose to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for over ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The plot begins when Tim and Millie transition from the urban environment to the rural area for Millie’s job. A familiar plot device, sure, but that’s mostly where the tropes cease. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their new home, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim tumble into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity takes hold of the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, blending elements of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and far away from his social circle. He fears the concept of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in Together never makes either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Both characters grapple with the type of challenges that arise in any relationship after ten years. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism does not come across as overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights work together symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the ending plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your partner and state, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can undertake today.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
